This has been quite the week for trailers! They kicked things off in style at the Star Wars Celebration with the first look at the new Disney + series “Andor.” The series is set five years before the events of “Rogue One” and focuses on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and his involvement with the fledgling rebel alliance. Writer/Director Tony Gilroy, who oversaw the reshoots of “Rogue One,” is the showrunner and confirmed there would be a second season. Even with the delays due to the covid pandemic, they managed to film twelve episodes, and twelve more have been promised for season two.
The trailer has the same gritty tone as “Rogue One” as we witness the invasion of Andor’s homeworld by the Empire, reminiscent of Nazi Germany’s takeover of Europe during World War II. Also returning from “Rogue One” is Genevieve O’Reilly as Senator Mon Mothma, who looks to be navigating a tense political environment as the Empire slowly destroys the democratic republic. Also starring are Stellan Skarsgard and Fiona Shaw in undisclosed roles. There are shades of a political thriller mixed with an intense war epic as we see the origins of the rebellion. I enjoyed Luna in “Rogue One,” and this is one of my favorite parts of the Star Wars timeline.
