I decided to switch gears a bit for this week’s Friday Music Video pick. After reviewing my past selections, it’s apparent I’ve been stuck in the 1980s (never a bad thing, in my book). So, this week, I’m choosing a current release, and as an added bonus, it’s a Halloween-themed tune. Hailing from English rock trio Muse, You Make Me Feel like it’s Halloween has the makings of a great horror Halloween anthem with a driving rock and roll hook.
You Make Me Feel like it’s Halloween is the fifth single from Muse’s new LP Will of the People. This is the band’s ninth album, and they’ve been most famous in the alternative rock scene, first appearing way back in 1999. The trio has a unique & distinct sound, a mix of alternative, electronica, and hard rock mixed with the fantastic falsetto of lead singer Matt Bellamy. With Bellamy’s impressive vocal range and emotive style, Muse brings a rock opera flair to the proceedings. The band’s biggest crossover hit was 2006s Starlight, and their Take a Bow tune was featured in many movie trailers like Watchmen in 2009. And Madness, released in 2012, is another gem in their catalog that receive decent airplay.
Upon the Will of the People album’s August release, the band released a visually striking music video for the Halloween-themed anthem. Directed by L.A.-based filmmaker Tom Teller, the psychedelic and rapidly edited video is a wild mashup of many iconic horror films like Scream, Friday the 13th, Stephen King’s IT, Psycho, and most prominently, The Shining. It’s an impressive menagerie of crazed imagery, interspersed with the English trio jamming to the song on stark black & white monitors.
It’s a shame that post-2010 MTV has all but abandoned the music video format. This song probably would’ve been in heavy rotation on the past version of the former music channel. The current state of MTV is utterly frustrating since so many artists like Lady GaGa, Beyonce, Harry Styles, and even Muse have released creative and exciting music videos that would thrive on a music-focused MTV. But alas, they are more interested in cheap reality TV schlock like Teen Mom.
I’ll end my soapbox rant and return the focus to the very cool Muse song. Will you be adding this to your Halloween playlist? Check out the music video below, and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Had not seen or heard this one before now. I thought the video was great. Had a creative, fresh, fabulous look while also paying tribute to horror films of the past as you noted. The song…I didn’t like as much. Goes great with the video, but as a stand-alone song it didn’t work for me. It is nice to see someone still putting great effort into their videos, even in light of MTV no longer being MTV.
Thanks for checking out the post. I’ll admit that Muse is an acquired taste; a close buddy of mine can’t get into them either. But the video is a fun, psychedelic watch, and I’m glad to see a new Halloween-themed tune that I can add to the playlist.
