I find it fascinating when classic songs get unearthed and rediscovered by the current generation. I remember when Journey’s 80’s anthem “Don’t Start Believing” climbed the charts after it was prominently featured in the tv smash “Glee” in 2009. Just a few years ago, Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” received a second look and chart prominence thanks to a highly viewed Tik Tok video of… a guy singing along to it on his skateboard!
Now English singer-songwriter Kate Bush is having a moment as she watches her 1985 hit “Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God)” rocket up the streaming and Billboard charts. Thanks to prominent needle drops in season 4 of the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” people are rediscovering the fantastic song and, hopefully, Bush’s entire music catalog.
The song was the first single from Bush’s 1985 album “Hounds of Love.” The entire album is a fantastic listen and an interesting mix of progressive rock with a digital sheen. You can see Bush’s influence on 90s alternative artists like Tori Amos and Bjork.
The music video was directed by David Garfath and had Kate Bush performing an interpretive dance routine with a male dancer. The stylized video has Bush wearing a grey Japanese hakama and culminates with a stream of dancers wearing paper copies of Bush’s face. Sadly, MTV never aired the video, stating they preferred clips with artists singing (lip-synching) their songs.
