She-Hulk (2022): The upcoming Disney series looks to be a fun, comedic romp through the MCU franchise

Disney dropped the first trailer for their new Disney + series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” set to debut on August 17th. This is our first proper look at the more comedic series after some brief scenes featured on the streamer’s sizzle reel late last year. The series stars Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and fan-favorite Mark Ruffalo as her cousin Bruce Banner/Hulk.

The series seems to be embracing that more tongue-of-cheek tone that was a hallmark of John Byrne’s “fourth wall” breaking comic book series in the late 80s. There are also shades of writer Dan Slott’s 2004 run with a very “Sex & the City” vibe. Imagine Samantha with green superpowers navigating her dating life between supervillain brawls and a dash of meta-commentary on the comic book industry. (Per her iconic cover, if you don’t watch the series, she might come over and rip up all your X-men comics.)

The two-minute preview shows Maslany’s Jennifer Walters getting some pointers from her cousin Bruce Banner (Ruffalo) about the nature of her hulk powers. Unlike Bruce, the transformation is purely physical, where she doesn’t “hulk” out and go crazy. Attorney Walters will be working at a superhuman Law firm, promising all sorts of hijinks. We also get a glimpse of Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky/Abomination, last seen in a cameo in last year’s “Shang-Chi.”

Maslany looks charming in the lead role, and there are some fun quippy lines worthy of Amy Schumer. My only complaint is that the “hulk” CGI looks waxy and stilted, posing a big problem for Maslany’s comedic performance. Here’s hoping they iron out the visual effects and deliver a fun, solid romp. I was utterly underwhelmed by “Moon Knight,” so here’s hoping this is a return to form of the television/streaming MCU.
