Trailer Review: Black Panther-Wakanda Forever (2022)

One of the big trailer releases at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend was “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 Oscar-nominated original was the centerpiece of Disney/Marvel’s presentation in the mighty Hall H. And the footage did not disappoint.

There’s been much behind-the-scenes drama for the sequel that has been delayed due to the Covid pandemic. Of course, the unexpected and tragic death of original star Chadwick Boseman and the decision by Marvel not to recast the role of T’Challa threw a wrench for returning writer/director Ryan Coogler. Reportedly he had to rewrite much of the script, and there is a big question mark of who will be taking up the Black Panther mantle. Add to the mix that actress Letitia Wright dipped her toe into controversial anti-vax territory on Twitter along with numerous delays in filming.

That said, the new teaser shows a polished and beautiful-looking film. We see shots of the nation of Wakanda along with Shuri and Queen Ramonda mourning the death of their beloved King T’Challa. We also get our first glimpse of The Submariner Namor, Marvel’s answer to Aquaman, played by Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta. The film looks to be a clash of civilizations between Wakanda and the underwater world of the submariners. The impressive underwater cinematography, particularly the submariners riding those whales, looks to give the upcoming “Avatar: The Way of Water” a run for its money. And yes, we get our first hint of the new Black Panther baring their claws for action. We should credit Marvel for keeping the identity of the new Panther under wraps for the last few years.

The new Black Panther will be revealed on November 11, 2022. Take a look at the trailer below:

  1. I enjoyed the trailer as well. It is very encouraging, and I am looking forward to the film. Marvel has their work cut out for them because some may think the Black Panther should have just ended with Chadwick’s passing, while others would have liked a little bit more time to pass before going back to Wakanda. As well, Marvel has to walk the fine line between the audience sadness inherent in honoring him…while also providing an entertaining and exciting movie. I have no issue with them pushing forward, but I know it will be a challenge. Based on the trailer, it’s a great-looking film. Hopefully, the storyline will be great also.

    • I agree on all points. Director Ryan Cooler has quite the needle to thread with this movie. My anticipation is sky high as we wait patiently for opening weekend in November.
